Every Sunday, we begin our worship services with a simple breath prayer from Milford First's lay leader to guide us through the week. Below are this month’s breath prayers along with weekly reflections from Deb Johnson. We hope these prayers are meaningful tools for your spiritual life and journey!

May the trust between us be whole."

Trust between people is not something quickly found. It takes hard work and

proof of sincerity to demonstrate you can be trusted. There is a phrase that says,

"It takes 30 years to build a reputation and 30 seconds to destroy it." The same

could be said about the core value of trust.

Visitors and regular members of our church come seeking sanctuary and safety

inside these walls. Over time that sense of trust builds, revealing more honest

and authentic conversations. Our success of small groups is a testimony to

this! We want to support each other especially in times of need. That foundation

of trust opens the door to share our concerns as well as our joys.

Life outside these walls is precarious at best. Challenges appear out of nowhere.

Frustration and disappointment arise when we least expect it. When we speak

this shared blessing and this week's breath prayer, let's focus on truly offering

our support and care to one another. Let's extend not only our love for others

but follow through in a manner that demonstrates we can truly trust one

another.

May the words between us be true."

Words travel quickly now—

spoken across a room,

sent in a text,

typed in an email,

shared in a post.

Every word carries something:

encouragement or discouragement,

healing or hurt,

connection or distance.

So let our words be more than promises.

Let them be supported by action,

shaped by love,

and grounded in truth.

When we say, “I’ll check on you,”

may we follow through.

When we say, “I’m praying for you,”

may we pause and pray.

When we say, “You are welcome here,”

may our hospitality make room.

When we say, “You are not alone,”

may our presence prove it.

Many of us have experienced the gift

of someone whose actions matched their words—

someone who remembered,

someone who returned,

someone who showed up.

This week, may we speak with care.

May we listen before responding.

May we choose honesty without cruelty,

kindness without pretense,

and courage without condemnation.

Even when conversations are difficult,

may our words communicate:

I see you.

I hear you.

I am here with you.

“May our eyes truly see one another."

Sunday, August 23, 2026
“May our hearts truly touch one another."

We’ve all heard someone say, “My heart just wasn’t in it.”

And we know the difference, don’t we?

We can go through the motions.

We can say the right words.

We can show up without ever really being present.

But love asks something more of us. Love asks for our whole heart.

So today, we breathe deeply and ask God to renew within us the strength to be

fully present—to one another, to our neighbors, and to the work God has placed

before us.

As people of faith, we are called to love with open hearts—not guarded hearts,

distracted hearts, or half-hearted hearts.

And in a world where people are often suspicious of one another, genuine

compassion can be surprising. A listening ear. An unexpected kindness. A

generous spirit. A place made at the table.

Sometimes the most powerful witness we offer is simply allowing another

person to experience what it feels like to be genuinely seen, valued, and loved.

So this week, we pray for God to search our hearts.

Where they have become hardened, soften them.

Where they have become crowded, make room.

Where they have become weary, renew them.

Where fear has closed them, open them again.

And may the love we carry become so sincere, so generous, and so visible that

someone else encounters the heart of Christ through us.

Because sometimes God changes the world exactly this way: one open heart

touching another.

“May our souls truly hold one another."

There are moments when simply seeing one another is not enough. We are

called to make room for one another—to carry each other’s joys, burdens,

stories, hopes, and hurts.

In a world that moves quickly, where conversations are rushed and attention is

divided, this prayer invites us to something deeper: to be fully present. To

recognize the image of God in the person beside us. To remember that every

person we meet carries a story we may never completely know.

And sometimes, loving one another that deeply requires prayer.

Our lives are also shaped by the people who have carried us.

So for a few moments, allow your heart to remember.

Bring to mind a family member who has gone before you…

Remember a dear friend whose presence you still miss…

Think of someone who helped shape your faith…

And hold close the memory of someone whose love, wisdom, or encouragement

helped make you who you are today.

Their influence remains.

Their love still echoes.

Their lives have become part of our lives.

And now widen the circle.

Hold in prayer the people walking beside you today—the ones you love easily

and the ones you struggle to understand.

Hold those whose stories are still unfolding.

Hold those you have not yet met, but whom God may someday place in your

path.

May we become people who slow down enough to notice, care deeply enough

to listen, and love courageously enough to carry one another through this life.
